Parkinson’s disease is the second commonest neurodegenerative disorder, with an ever increasing population. Accurate diagnosis is important not only for the individual affected, but also for their family and for the health professional involved in their care. Accurate diagnosis will ensure appropriate treatment and management, and discussion regarding prognosis. As Parkinson’s disease progresses, often “traditional” oral therapies are insufficient in providing the same quality of life as seen in the years following diagnosis, and device assisted therapies became mainstay of treatment. This session will aim to cover Parkinson’s disease diagnosis and management.
Learning Outcomes
- Outline the diagnostic criteria for Parkinson’s disease and identify possible red flags
- Identify complications associated with Parkinson’s disease
- Identify when to refer individuals with Parkinson’s disease for device assisted therapy
