New MyMedicare Checklist for General Practices

The Western NSW Primary Health Network has released a new resource to support your general practice in registering patients for MyMedicare.

General Practices have been supporting patients to register with MyMedicare at higher rates across Australia since new General Practice Chronic Conditions Management Plans came into effect on 1 July 2025. As of October 2025, almost 18% of all Australians are now registered with their preferred general practice through MyMedicare.

This checklist has been designed to support general practices to register patients for MyMedicare, communicate about MyMedicare, and meet consent requirements for MyMedicare. We encourage your practice to incorporate this checklist into your workflows and share it with your team. Access the checklist here.

Key Messages

  • MyMedicare registration is voluntary and free for eligible patients.
  • There are two registration methods: self-registration via the MyGov app and paper registration forms. Practices may wish to encourage patients familiar with MyGov to use this method to reduce the workload of entering forms into HPOS.
  • Informed consent for MyMedicare registration is essential. Patients must be fully aware of the benefits and any restrictions, and registration must be initiated by the patient (through MyGov) or with their signed approval.
  • The checklist includes scenarios to help practices advise patients who attend only one practice location versus those who attend multiple practices, ensuring patients understand the implications for chronic condition management and telehealth services.
  • Practices should retain all signed forms and follow policy for patients unable to sign.
