Clinical skills for working with people with comorbid drug & alcohol and personality disorder – Project Air Strategy

The Project Air Strategy (www.projectairstrategy.org ) is a NSW Health initiative to support compassionate care for people with personality disorder and complex challenges. The strategy supports enhanced identification, treatment and inclusive care for those who are crisis prone, traumatised, self-harming, using substances, emotionally deregulated and have prominent personality disorder symptoms.


This one-day skills training will provide a comprehensive overview of a relationship-based approach to working alongside consumers with comorbidity including trauma and personality disorder. It provides specific guidance for health professionals in different drug and alcohol care contexts, detox inpatient settings, community-based outreach services, and those working with specific groups including young people and working with families. This training provides an opportunity to obtain continuous professional development.
Learning Outcomes:
As a consequence of this training participants will:
• Enhance skills in early identification of personality disorder and care pathways
• Be oriented to clinical management guidelines and evidence-based treatments
• Understand how to work with comorbid drug and alcohol and personality challenges
• Learn how to implement structured brief intervention skills and strategies
• Develop skills in working with specific groups including young people, parents, connecting with families and carers
• Explore solutions to clinical problems and complex care issues in different contexts, including inpatient, residential and community settings

Target Audience:
Drug & Alcohol and Mental Health clinicians across NSW LHDs who are working with acute personality disorder presentations through emergency, inpatient, detoxification or acute assessment teams, and D&A and Mental Health workers in community settings who case manage or provide services to clients with personality disorder features.
The training will suit medical, nursing, psychology and other allied health staff and workers who have direct client contact with persons with personality disorder.
Senior clinicians and consultants with expertise in personality disorder treatment are strongly encouraged to attend to facilitate transfer of training back to local sites.
