The Cancer Institute of NSW has engaged Family Planning Australia to build the capacity of Aboriginal Health Workers (AHW’s) to promote and provide support to Aboriginal patients and clients and community members about cervical screening tests and the Cervical Screening Program (CSP) and new guidelines introduced in July 2022. Information and knowledge provided pertains to these new clinical guidelines, safety during pregnancy, and engaging with patients regarding cervical screening in a manner that is culturally safe and appropriate.

Who is the training for?

The training aims to increase the capacity for Aboriginal Health Practitioners to initiate conversations with never screened, over-due or under screened women about the benefits of cervical screening, knowledge of what the testing involves including an understanding of eligibility, access, self-collection options and a basic understanding of the screening pathways.

How long does it take?

The training is delivered free over a 3-hour period with the trainers attending your workplace providing a face-to-face catered session that is fully funded by the Cancer Institute of NSW.

Why is this training important for Aboriginal Health Practitioners and those working with Aboriginal women in a health setting?

Statistics show that Aboriginal women have twice the occurrence rate and more than 4 times more likely to die from cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is a preventable disease that can be detected and stopped with appropriate screening. There is no limit on numbers, and we encourage you to invite participation by other services that have Aboriginal Health Practitioners and Aboriginal Health Workers to attend.

To register your interest for the training, please contact the Family Planning Australia Health Promotion team: healthpromotion@fpnsw.org.au
