This face-to-face education and networking session will discuss the increased risk of later cardiovascular disease and diabetes in women who have had hypertension in pregnancy and how these women should be followed up. The potential role of the microbiome in the development of hypertension in pregnancy and gestational diabetes and a new study of the microbiome in women who are planning pregnancy, the MothersBabies Study, will also be presented.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes after hypertension in pregnancy
  • Describe effective strategies to educate women about their increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes after hypertension in pregnancy
  • Describe the contribution of the microbiome to medical disorders in pregnancy
  • Explain the potential of the MothersBabies study to improve our understanding of the microbiome during normal and abnormal pregnancy
