With Australia’s rising rates of liver disease risk factors,
and the increasing prevalence of non-hepatitisassociated
liver disease, all Australian general
practitioners will see and manage patients with or
at risk of this condition.

A greater awareness of liver disease and cirrhosis and
greater confidence in screening, identification and
management in primary care will help to mitigate these
trends and reduce the heavy and costly disease burden
in the community.

Learning outcomes:

1. Outline the definition of chronic liver disease and
cirrhosis
2. Describe the diagnostic criteria of cirrhosis via an
accurate understanding of investigations and clinical
signs used in the assessment of liver disorders
3. List the complications and sequelae associated
with cirrhosis and cite the signs, symptoms and
investigations used to identify them
4. Explain the lifestyle, medication, procedural and
surgical management of cirrhosis complications,
and the role general practitioners play in that
management
5. Detail the management of a patient with
decompensated liver disease in the general
practice setting, the role of gastroenterologists,
and criteria for admission/hospital-based care
