We are sharing information from the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development regarding H5N1 Avian Influenza (H5 bird flu) to help ensure communities remain informed and prepared.
H5 bird flu is a highly contagious disease that primarily affects birds. The virus has caused significant impacts on wild bird and mammal populations overseas and has recently been detected for the first time in Australia in wild birds in coastal regions.
There has been a confirmed case of H5 bird flu in Western NSW. While the risk to the general public remains relatively low, authorities continue to closely monitor the situation.
What to watch for
Please be alert to:
- Groups of sick or dead wild birds or poultry.
- Sick or dead seabirds, waterbirds, shorebirds, birds of prey, or marine mammals.
- Animals showing unusual behaviour or signs of illness, including difficulty standing or flying, unusual movements, breathing difficulties, swelling around the head or eyes, or sudden death.
Protecting yourself and your community
The risk of H5 bird flu to people in Australia is currently considered low; however, precautions are important:
- Do not touch sick or dead birds or wildlife.
- Keep children and pets away from affected animals.
- Avoid feeding wild birds and other wildlife.
- Practice good hand hygiene after contact with animals or animal products.
Reporting suspected cases
If you observe multiple sick or dead birds or other wildlife:
- Avoid contact with the animals.
- Record the location and, if safe, take photographs.
- Report concerns immediately to a veterinarian, ranger, community leader, or the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
