Know your urgent care options this summer

Summer is a busy time of year, and illness and injury don’t always happen when it’s convenient. Knowing where to go for care can help you get the right support when you need it.

What is urgent care?

Urgent care options may be appropriate for:

  • Minor infections
  • Minor fractures, sprains and sports injuries
  • Neck and back pain
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Minor cuts
  • Insect bites and rashes
  • Minor eye and ear problems
  • Respiratory illness
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Mild burns

These conditions can also be managed by your usual GP. However, urgent care may be an option when you need treatment sooner and cannot get a GP appointment.

Not sure if it’s urgent?

Call healthdirect on 1800 022 222

Healthdirect is available anytime, day or night.

Your call will be answered by a registered nurse who can assess your symptoms and help connect you with the most appropriate care. This may be:

  • your GP
  • a pharmacy
  • an urgent care service
  • an emergency department

If you’re unsure where to go, start with healthdirect.

Western NSW Primary Health Network (WNSW PHN) is running an urgent care awareness campaign this summer to help people better understand the urgent care options available in their local area.

Keep an eye on your letterbox and social media over the coming months. Households will receive information about local urgent care options, supported by social media advertising to help communities know where and how to access the most appropriate care in their area.

Whether you’re at home or travelling within the region, it’s worth knowing your options before you need them.
