Navigating uncertainty: supporting young people with life’s milestones

Many of us often feel unsure about the future, especially young people who are finding their feet from high school into adulthood.

From making new friends in high school to applying for jobs, facing rejections, landing a first job, learning to drive, and embracing independence – these milestones can be exciting but overwhelming.

Fortunately, young people experiencing feelings of overwhelm or uncertainty have a place to turn for help: the headspace Outreach Program.

At 13 years old, Adam felt adrift and uncertain about his future. With the guidance of his Youth Worker at headspace, Julie, Adam was able to establish achievable, meaningful goals, overcome setbacks, and take positive steps towards his future.

Adam builds confidence through goal planning

Goal planning plays a crucial role in the outreach approach. Adam identified two personal goals: find a job and save enough money to buy a motorbike.

That seemed straight-forward enough, but Adam had to overcome obstacles and show determination to achieve his goals.

With Julie’s support, Adam completed his first job application at a local supermarket. After two weeks without a response, he began to feel discouraged and doubted whether he’d be able to achieve his goals and buy his dream motorbike.

Julie worked with Adam to explore other opportunities in town. Adam decided to approach the owners of a local hospitality venue and ask if they needed help washing dishes or serving meals.

Taking the initiative, stepping out of his comfort zone and starting the conversation represented a significant moment of growth for Adam.

A week later, Adam received a call offering him the job.

About the headspace Outreach Program

The headspace Outreach Program is designed to provide support directly within local communities, with Youth Workers based where young people live, learn, and connect.

By being embedded in community settings, headspace Outreach Program is designed to build strong relationships, offer consistent support, and help young people set and achieve goals that build confidence and life skills.

The headspace Outreach Program is operated by Marathon Health. This Program is supported by funding from Western NSW Primary Health Network through the Australian Government’s PHN Program.

You can reach out to headspace Outreach Program directly or you can also ask a friend, teacher, parent, other family member, GP, health worker or community agency to contact headspace for you.
