WNSW PHN Diabetes Care in RACH’s: Understanding the Fundamentals of Diabetes

Print

WNSW PHN is pleased to offer a 4-part Diabetes Education Series designed specifically for residential aged care staff. Delivered by diabetes educator Irene Kopps, the series will build knowledge and practical skills to support safe, effective diabetes management and improve outcomes for residents living with diabetes.

Session 1: Understanding the Fundamentals of Diabetes

Our first presentation will explore the fundamentals of diabetes, providing a practical foundation for staff working in residential aged care. The session will cover the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, as well as less common forms such as pancreatogenic diabetes, and explain the physiological processes that influence blood glucose levels.

Participants will also learn about effective blood glucose monitoring, including when and how to test, recognising patterns of high and low blood glucose levels, and using results to support safe and appropriate diabetes management. By developing a strong understanding of these core concepts, staff will be better equipped to identify potential issues early, support resident wellbeing, and contribute to improved health outcomes.
