Respiratory complications are common in SCI, and are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in this population.
This session will explore the pathophysiology of respiratory function following SCI including risk factors, management of respiratory needs for both ventilation and secretion clearance limitations; including manual techniques, mechanical insufflation/exsufflation, non-invasive ventilation and inspiratory muscle training.
Available resources and funding options for key equipment items will be discussed.
Attendees will gain:
- Understanding of how SCI can impact ventilation or secretion clearance, and how these problems can influence respiratory function in SCI
- Knowledge on treatment options for these (including manual techniques, MIE, IMT, NIV)
- Improved familiarity with scripting pathways and funding options in NSW
