Diabetes in pregnancy

This session will provide an update on the current Australian Antenatal Diabetes in Pregnancy Guidelines, including both Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus; discuss the local burden of disease; explore screening for diabetes in pregnancy (who, when and how); outline management principles for pre-conception and planning for pregnancy, early pregnancy and post-delivery care, briefly review recent updates to diagnostic criteria for Gestational Diabetes and discuss pregnancy in women with a history of bariatric surgery.

This education activity will predominantly focus on outpatient antenatal care for women with overt Diabetes in Pregnancy, with a brief overview of management provided in the inpatient setting, directed towards HCPs, particularly GPs involved in outpatient Antenatal Care within the Western NSW LHD area.

Learning Outcomes

• Outline how to screen and initiate treatment for women, planning pregnancy or pregnant, with diabetes in coordination with Obstetric/Endocrine services

• Summarise specific local care models within WNSW LHD for Aboriginal women with GDM or Diabetes in Pregnancy
