Health professionals from across Western NSW strengthened their immunisation skills and confidence this month after completing a five-day, face-to-face training course funded by Western NSW Primary Health Network (WNSW PHN). The Immunisation Course for Health Professionals course, held from 16–20 March, was delivered by The Benchmarque Group, with presenters Ainslie Conway and Barry McCarthy. The course brought together 13 Practice Nurses, Aboriginal Health Pracitioners and Aboriginal Health Practitioner Trainees from across the region.
The practical, face-to-face format supported participants to build hands-on skills, ask questions and gain confidence in real world immunisation scenarios.
Participants reported increased confidence in administering vaccinations, managing catchup schedules, responding to adverse events and educating patients about immunisation.
Making vaccines more accessible
Many highlighted the benefits the training would bring to their local communities, including improved vaccine access, reduced pressure on doctors, and greater capacity to deliver immunisation services locally.
Key learnings from the training included:
- Safe vaccine preparation and administration
- Understanding immunisation schedules and catchup vaccinations
- Managing adverse events following immunisation, including adrenaline administration
- Knowledge of vaccine preventable diseases and legislation
- Building confidence to educate and support patients
Several participants said the training will support them to provide more vaccines, support outreach and offsite clinics, and help community members access immunisations sooner with reduced waiting times.
By investing in workforce education and training, Western NSW PHN continues to support a skilled and confident health workforce to deliver accessible, high-quality care across the region.
