Event Summary

Professor Arnold will discuss the importance of rheumatology skills in general practice, as musculoskeletal presentations are frequently seen in primary care. This education session will explore how to select appropriate tests to rule out rheumatic disease, offering practical strategies to support accurate diagnosis. It will also cover the diagnosis and management of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), one of the most common inflammatory conditions in general practice, and provide insights into how Rheumatologists approach patients presenting with arthralgia.

Learning Outcomes

  • Outline an evidence-based schema for ordering diagnostic and monitoring tests for patients with rheumatic disease
  • Identify clinical features of PMR and Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) and how to avoid diagnostic and therapeutic pitfalls
  • Describe the historical features of inflammatory versus mechanical arthritis presentations
  • Justify the use of, and interpret common first-line investigations for arthritis
