This month, The Wholesome Collective ran a series of cooking and nutrition classes in the towns of Forbes, Parkes, Wellington, Canowindra, Eugowra, and Molong. Funded by the WNSW PHN Community Wellbeing grants, these classes were delivered to support communities affected by the 2022 floods, helping residents increase their wellbeing and community spirit through nutrition and healthy eating.

The Wholesome Collective’s classes were described as energetic, fun, and informative. Presentations were led by dynamic duo Rebecca and Mary, a dietitian and home economist respectively, who provided valuable insights on nutrition, cost-effectiveness, and, most importantly, deliciousness. The sessions included how to prepare tasty and wholesome meals using fresh seasonal ingredients, with a focus on nutrition and affordability.

Open to everyone in the community, the program drew a diverse crowd, eager to learn and taste the delicious meals. Attendees gained confidence in cooking healthy, balanced meals at home using ingredients they may not have thought of. To ensure the principles were taken home, each attendee received The Wholesome Collective cookbook, which includes lunch box ideas, nutritional information, and a weekly menu planner.

By offering these free classes, The Wholesome Collective has played a crucial role in supporting flood-affected communities, helping residents to nourish their bodies and lift their spirits during challenging times.

Residents of flood affected communities have continued to show incredible resilience over the last two years in rebuilding and managing the ongoing affects of the flood events. WNSW PHN is thrilled to have been able to contribute to this and to help build and improve the health and mental wellbeing of its communities in the Central West and Western NSW region.
