WNSW PHN: Respiratory Health: Virtual Forum for GPs’ (webinar)
When |
15 November 2023 6:20pm - 8:30pm |
Where | Online Webinar |
Triple therapy may seem like the end of the line for patients with advanced COPD, however, there are other options that can profoundly affect a patient’s disease trajectory and quality of life. The first part of this webinar will discuss evidence-based treatments including pulmonary rehabilitation, long-term oxygen therapy, long-term non-invasive ventilation and lung volume reduction.
The second component of this webinar will focus on lung physiology testing, as a critical component in diagnosing respiratory diseases, and provide a brief overview of the lung physiology tests available at Dubbo Health Service and how to access them from primary care. The final component will address bronchiectasis, a common but underdiagnosed condition with significant morbidity. This talk will enable GPs to increase their identification of the condition and initiate
management.
Presented by:
Dr Budhima Nanayakkara, Respiratory & Sleep Physician

Learning outcomes
- Explain the rationale behind long-term oxygen prescription
- Discuss the benefit of long-term non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in terms of reducing mortality and hospital re-admissions and improving lung function quality of life
- Outline the rationale behind lung volume reduction in terms of optimising respiratory mechanics and gas-exchange
- Discuss which respiratory tests to request to answer key clinical questions and know when to refer to a specialist service
- Outline when to suspect bronchiectasis, what imaging is required for diagnosis, initial investigations for cause and ongoing management strategies
