This education event considers the challenge, history and current approaches to the dilemma of chicken/egg (which came first?) and schizophrenia/ID (which one am I seeing in this patient?). This session will be an opportunity for primary healthcare professionals to develop their knowledge and skills in mental health assessment and care of people with intellectual disability and identify resources that may assist in these processes.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this activity, you should be able to:

  • Outline the schizophrenias and their association with cognitive impairment & other neurodevelopmental conditions
  • Identify vulnerabilities and considerations including risks of neuroleptics, epilepsy, physical restraint in restrictive practices
  • Discuss emerging information on catatonia that is reshaping how this curious disorder is conceptualised
