The RACGP NSW&ACT, in collaboration with NSW Health, invites NSW GPs to a free HIV evening training session.

HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an easy, safe and effective method to
prevent HIV infection. Widespread use of PrEP in higher-risk individuals in NSW has resulted in a significant reduction in the number of new HIV diagnoses. GPs play a pivotal role in identifying those at risk and prescribing PrEP to prevent HIV infection. To build equitable access to PrEP there is renewed focus to make PrEP available to all patients at risk of HIV, including Aboriginal patients.

This training provide participants with practical skills and increased confidence to offer and prescribe PrEP in a culturally appropriate way to patients at risk of HIV and who identify as Aboriginal. The training is designed for GPs working in AMSs and in General Practice. The training will also include a patient's experience of accessing sexual health care.

Learning outcomes:

  • Identify principles of culturally appropriate care and considerations for prescribing PrEP to patients who identify as Aboriginal
  • Use a clinical decision making tool to prescribe HIV PrEP in-line with recently updated national Guidelines
  • Integrate comprehensive STI and HIV testing as part of a PrEP consultation
  • Identify referral pathways for more complex PrEP patient presentations, including positive HIV results
