Diabetes is a complex disease and the great majority of people are managed in general practice.  There have been substantial changes in practice in recent years particularly related to newer drug therapies and monitoring technologies. A number of cases will be discussed.

The following learning outcomes will be covered:

  • Identify, following first line Metformin in Type 2 diabetes, the most appropriate second and third line medications dependent on patient’s clinical characteristics
  • Recognise the importance of using diabetes medications that do not cause hypoglycaemia and other adverse effects, if possible and how to overcome some of these adverse effects
  • Describe how to develop and apply individualised targets for diabetes management based on patient’s comorbidities
    • Describe the difference between sliding scale and basal bolus correction guides and why not to use sliding scale systems in everyday practice
